The Augustan Society, Inc., has the study of medals and decorations within its purview, and it is thus appropriate to have a Medals & Decorations Study Group. In the natural course of events, this study has included compiling a small collection of medals and other decorations.

Primarily, the Medals and Decorations Study Group is responsible for housing, maintaining, and cataloguing the Society’s collection of medals, decorations, and related insignia. Additionally, the Group will perform the following functions:

  • Conduct research on medals and decorations for Augustan publications. Research can be based on items in the Society’s collection, or in general.
  • Assist Augustans and others with identification of or information regarding medals and decorations.
  • Be prepared to receive and incorporate in the Society’s collection any medals, decorations, or insignia donated or bequeathed by Society members.
  • Liaise with the Chivalry Committee on matters concerning chivalric insignia.
  • Conduct outreach to non-Augustan groups with similar mission sets (Orders and Medals Research Society, Orders and Medals Society of America) with the intent to collaborate on research.

At present, it is not clear where or how large the collection might be. Those identified to date fit into a single box, the collection is presently being sorted out from the rest of the museum collection.
