Used Book Sales
The Augustan Society, Inc., often finding itself in posession of used books that are not useful to the achievement of the Mission, it is appropriate to conduct Used Book Sales in various ways.
Used books surplus to need come from several primary sources:
- Books deasessioned from the Library collection;
- Books donated to the Library that are inapprorpiate; and
- Books donated with the intent that they be sold to raise funds.
All are treated the same, with the obvious exception that books on Augustan topics may be marketed different than off-topic books.
Books may be listed on flyers which are sent with either Augustæum or The Augustan Omnibus mailings. These should include brief descriptions, and pricing that at a minimum will double the average cost of packing and shiping. (The Society has a policy that all shipping fees are the same amount, amortizing the more costly foreign shipments over the less costly domestic ones. Periodic reviews are approrpiate to confirm that the standard shipping fee is sufficient.)
Once a Headquarters is opened, used books should be displayed for sale, each with a suitable price marked thereon. This may be in the form of colored or coded stickers with a posted chart giving prices. This approach permits the prices to be periodically and systematically reduced over time.
Some books may never find a buyer, even at the minimum practical price. The management of the Used Book Sales program may discard such titles, with a preference that they be donated to a local "Friends of the Library" program.
