Justiciar General

The Heraldry Department and the Heraldry Committee of The Augustan Society, Inc., are headed by the Justiciar General, as the committee chairman is styled, who is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the President.

The Justiciar General is responsible for the activities of the Heraldry Committee and overseeing any subcommittees.

The specific duties of the Justiciar General include:

  • Administering the heraldic activities of the Society, including specifically the review of petitions for Registration of Arms;
  • Appointing a Deputy Justiciar General (committee vice-chairman) within his first year in office, and keeping them sufficiently well informed that they may take over at need;
  • Appointing an Arms Chancellor to assist with tracking and record-keeping for arms registration, should he feel the need;
  • Appointing the members of the Heraldry Committee, including artists (volunteer), Vice-Justiciars for each heraldic jurisdiction, and such other Members as he may see fit;
  • Arranging for contracts with paid heraldic artists when no suitable volunteers are available (Board approval of contracts is required);
  • Assisting or delegating, when called upon with heraldic issues submitted by other committees or officers;
  • Coordinating projects that fall under the scope of this committee, unless the project is assigned to an established Study Group;
  • Assisting the Librarian in the selection of new publications and the weeding of old; and
  • Submitting an Annual Report to the Board (via the Assistant Secretary) each July.
