Society of Descendants of the Conquest

The Society of Descendants of the Conquest (SDC) is a dependency of The Augustan Society, Inc. Online data is here.

The SDC was organized to further interest in the study of the Conquest and the individuals involved. Scholarly and genealogical data gathered are submitted to The Augustan Omnibus and the Family of Augustans Study Group.

The SDC is governed by the Dean of the SDC, appointed by and answerable to the Dean of Studies.

Membership Classes

Membership in the society is available in two non-exclusive classes:

Conqueror Class is open to those who can prove a lineage from William the Conqueror.

Companion Class is open to those who can prove a lineage from one of William's recognized companions.

Petitioners may apply for both classes simultaneously for the same price. The entry fee is $100 for one or two classes at once; $50 for adding another class later; plus the Genealogist Fee for each lineage submitted, including corrections and extensions.

Insignia

Sdc.arms.gifThe arms of the SDC is an inescutcheon Gules ... four swords Argent ... two crowns ... two lions passant Or, upon the shield of The Augustan Society, as shown to the left. Note: Need the correct blazon here.
Sdc.badge.gifThe insignia of the SDC is a lapel pin of the inescutcheon described above, as shown to the left. Informally, this may be worn on the left lapel. Augustan Society members may wear the pin on the ribbon of the Medal of Membership when appropriate.

All members, in whichever category, must submit the entry fee, and will receive the certificate of membership and the insignia of the Society. Members may belong to more than one class.

Induction Process

  1. Petitioners must submit to Headquarters Staff a completed petition, payment of the Entry Fee, payment of the Genealogist Fee, and such other evidence of qualification as may be needed. Headquarters Staff may complete the petition form if all data is supplied in another format.
  2. Headquarters Staff will confirm that the lineage is in standard form and appears complete. Failing this, they will remand the lineage to the petitioner for additional information.
  3. Headquarters Staff will forward the lineage to the Genealogy Committee for review. That Committee will convert the lineage into standard form and into a GED file, if needed.
  4. If the petitioner is applying for both classes at once, the review will be conducted in parallel. Should there be a problem with one, the other will be put on hold, unless the petitioner chooses to split the petition and pay the additional fee for adding a class later.
  5. The Lineage being accepted by the Genealogy Committee, Headquarters Staff will create a letter of welcome and a certificate of membership, these may be signed by the Dean of the SDC either physically or electronically at his discretion. If there is no Dean or they are unresponsive, the President will sign. Headquarters Staff will apply the Seal of the Corporation to the certificate before it is sent.
  6. Headquarters Staff will notify the Augustæum Editor of the induction if the petitioner is an Augustan Member.
  7. Headquarters Staff will notify the Custodian of Insignia of the induction.
  8. The Custodian of Insignia will send the appropriate insignia with a cover letter.
