The Augustan Society, Inc., has as one of it's mission objectives the creation and maintenance of a Library. This Library is under the direction of a Librarian, who is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the President.
Duties include:
- Planning and implementing the physical arrangement of the library within the Headquarters;
- Appointing such members as he sees fit to subsidiary roles within the library;
- Creating a Library Committee of these members, to include the President and Headquarters Staff as ex officio members;
- Establishing and maintaining cataloging software suitable to the needs of library staff and patrons;
- Establishing and maintaining a classification system suitable to the collection and the needs of the patrons;
- Cataloging the collection, to the extent practicable;
- Budgeting for library operations;
- Selecting items to add or remove from the collection, giving due deference to recommendations of committees, study groups, and patrons;
- Soliciting donations of members' collections;
- Naming an Assistant Librarian (Library Committee Vice-Chairman) within his first year in office (presuming a qualified and willing volunteer can be found locally); and
- Such other activities as seem necessary to improve and maintain the Library and the collection.
While it is desirable that the Librarian have a degree in either Library Science or Information Science, this is not a requirement. Those without a relevant degree may choose to style themselves "Library Director" or "Library Chairman" instead.
