The Genealogy Department of The Augustan Society, Inc., would engage in the following activities:
Contents
Genealogy Committee
The Genealogy Committee is composed of the Genealogy Chairman, the members of other committees assigned to the Genealogy Department, such members as the Chairman sees fit, and the President and Consuls as ex officio members.
The Chairman is named by the President and serves at his pleasure. The members are named by the Chairman, and serve at his pleasure.
All activities of the Genealogy Department fall under the control of the Genealogy Committee unless the Board or Chairman has created another Committee and charged them with responsibility.
Lineage Certification Committee
Presently, the Genealogy Committee, acting as the Lineage Certification Committee, will review lineages submitted and compare the data and sources to contemporary genealogical standards. A fee is exacted for this service based on the total number of generations involved (including first and last), but if portions of the lineage have been previously approved, a credit will be issued for those duplicated generations.
This work may be cursory, with only spot-checking of sources, or it may be an in-depth review with most sources verified, as it may seem necessary and appropriate to the Committee. This may or may not be an adequate process for the future.
Proposal: The Society should maintain and publish the standards to be applied to the review and approval of lineages, including the question of when an in-depth survey might be needed.
Proposal: The Society should maintain and publish a Standard Format for Lineages, and oblige petitions for review to adhere to that format when written, or to GED format when submitted digitally.
Proposal: The Society should maintain and publish the standards to be applied to the certification of lineages.
Note please a distinction here between "approving" and "certifying" a lineage. The former means our confidence is sufficient in the lineage as a whole to admit someone to membership in a Sub-Group. The latter means the Society places our reputation behind each item (excepting those after 1940 for which documentation is not offered).
Proposal: The Society should publish in a suitable form those lineages that have been approved or certified. Such to redact most data more recent than the latest release of US Census data (presently 1940).
Descents from Antiquity
This a project to propose and prove or disprove descents from antiquity. This will involve publishing proposed lineages as a tool to generate discussion and consensus. A final report on each link will be published in The Augustan Omnibus.
Proposal: The Society should more clearly specify and publish the purpose and scope of the Descents from Antiquity project.
Proposal: The Society should more clearly identify the individual lines that it attempts to prove or disprove with the Descents from Antiquity project.
Proposal: The Society should produce reports on each of the lines studied by the Descents from Antiquity project on a regular basis until each is proven or disproven, with the final reports on each published in the Augustan Omnibus.
Family of Augustans
The objective of this project is to computerize lineages of Augustans whose genealogies are stored at Headquarters or have appeared in various Society publications with the intent to demonstrate our interrelatedness, and to identify common ancestors, both for the sake of fraternity and to assist one another with genealogical research.
Proposal: The Society should document and publish the process by which the Family of Augustans project is to be pursued.
Proposal: The Society should place the combined lineages included in the Family of Augustans project online for use by members and possibly others. This should take the form of a useful web site, not just a collection of GED files.
Library Support
The Department, either through the main Committee, a sub-committee, or a designated officer, will advise the Library Department in matters of accession, classification, and deaccession of materials on this subject.
Article Solicitation
The Department, either through the main Committee, a sub-committee, or a designated officer, will solicit articles on this subject for the Augustan Omnibus, in cooperation with the Omnibus Editor.
