The Augustan Society, Inc., has the study of philatelics (stamps) within its purview, and it is delegated to the Philatelic Study Group to conduct that study. In the natural course of events, this study has included compiling a substantial collection of stamps.
These stamps are used both for the study thereof directly, and photographs of same may be used to illustrate Society publications. To this end, a focused collection that display images of monarchs, seals, heraldry, and perhaps other topics should rightly be held, even while this Study Group is inactive.
The collection is a combination of several individuals’ donated collections, plus some deliberate work to collect topical stamps. These need to be organized into the following collections, with surplus material sold.
- Comprehensive collection (which itself might be sold)
- Castles on Stamps
- Chivalry on Stamps
- Flags on Stamps
- Heraldry on Stamps
- Insignia on Stamps
- Royalty on Stamps
- Possibly others at the discretion of the Philatelic Study Group
There is an additional challenge in identifying the personal collections of our Founder, which have been packed without specific identification. These need to be separated and returned to his heir.
At present, some of the philatelic collection has been found among the Library materials, and more among the former Museum collection. The numbering on the boxes suggests that there is more yet to be found. The collection is presently being consolidated in preparation for shipping to the Study Group Coordinator.
Books on the topic are to be shelved in the Library unless the Coordinator asks for them. In such case, dated catalogs need not be returned.
This group is presently dormant, but may be revived by any interested Member by petition to the Dean of Studies.
