The Augustan Society, Inc., has long registered arms, and The Augustan Society Roll of Arms is published to make that information available. Alas, paper books are difficult and expensive, and are rarely so available as to make their use reasonable. For this reason, it has been decided to build an Online Armorial at our Main Website.
Clearly, this will require an Index so that the arms may be called up by name. It would also be useful to build an Ordinary of Arms so that arms without a name attached can also be conveniently located. This projects are considered separate, but related, and it will likely prove most efficient for one individual to be responsible for all three. The close support of the Webmaster will also be needed.
In order to produce the Ordinary, it will be necessary to obtain translations of the blazons into English. This will require the support of the Heraldry Committee and the various Vice-Justiciars. Arms for which there are no English blazons available will not be uploaded, as there is no way to integrate them into the Online Ordinary.
The priority for publication is:
- Arms the Society has registered and published in the first three volumes of The Augustan Society Roll of Arms which have English blazons.
- Arms the Society has registered, but not yet published, which have English blazons.
- Arms published in various Society publications, but not registered, which have English blazons.
- Arms registered by other cooperating US registries which have English blazons.
This last will require their close support, as they will be the ones to supply us with the blazon and artwork. It is understood that not all registries maintain artwork (and some may not have retained blazons). The arms registered by such agencies may be included in the Heraldry Index, but obviously without links to pages with the relevant artwork. It may prove prudent to have these link to a single page on the site that explains why artwork and blazon are not available, perhaps directing inquiries to the website of the registering agency.
