The heraldic activities of The Augustan Society, Inc., are under the direction of the Heraldry Committee. The Committee Chairman is styled Justiciar General and is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the President. The Justiciar General appoints all other members of the Committee and the Chairman of other committees in the Heraldry Department.


Heraldry Committee Membership

Members include:

  • Justiciar General (Chairman)
  • Deputy Justiciar General (Vice-Chairman)
  • Vice-Justiciars for various heraldic jurisdictions
  • Heraldic artists (volunteers only)
  • Such additional members as the Chairman may see fit
  • The President and Headquarters Staff ex officio

At present, the following programs are Study Groups or programs of the Communications Department. While it is recommended that their coordinators and editors be appointed to the Heraldry Committee, it is not required.

Heraldry Committee Duties

  • To oversee the heraldic operations of the Society;
  • To create and grant Arms and Logos to the various Sub-Groups, Committees, Study Groups, and Officers of the Society;
  • To assist members and non-members with the design of armorial achievements, and with registering or obtaining grants from national agencies;
  • To register arms for members and non-members;
  • To answer heraldic research questions put to the Society (paid or unpaid, the latter limited to brief or easy questions);
  • To advise the Library on the accessions, organization, and deaccessons;
  • To solicit articles for The Omnibus on the topic of heraldry;
  • To provide at least one item per year for Augustæum;
  • To submit a report of activities and plans to the Board of Directors annually and as the Board or President may request.
