Production Editor
The Production Editor is responsible for printing, binding, and mailing most books and periodicals published by The Augustan Society, Inc. He is named by the Editor-in-Chief and serves at his pleasure, notwithstanding that practicality argues that he be a member of the Headquarters Staff.
The Production Editor normally has physical possession of our large printer (an HP 5550dn which can print up to 12×18" paper in full color), and our binders, staplers, and other needed tools. Obviously, he must also provide space for paper stock, ink cartridges, labels, and staples as well.
Due to the limitations of Linux printer drivers, it is presently strongly advised that he also possess a computer running Windows XP or newer with suitable printer drivers. Other options may prove practical, and one hopes that Linux printer drivers improve soon. Suitable computers are in storage.
It is the responsibility of the Editors of each publication to provide the Production Editor with copy in an acceptable electronic format. If a submission is found to be improperly formatted, or significant errors found, the matter will be referred back to the Editor responsible for changes. That said, the Production Editor will not be held responsible for any errors in the files submitted.
The Production Editor will request of Headquarters a count of the mailing list for each publication, as well as the desired overprint. The mailing list will usually be provided as a data file that can be printed on suitable labels. It may prove prudent to grant the Production Editor direct access to our website's member database, especially if read-only access is developed.
As the Budget is not yet properly structured to provide specific funding for the activities of the Production Editor, he will be reimbursed for any good-faith effort he makes.
Book printing is presently contemplated to involve the Production Editor printing the bodies of the books, and arranging for binding to be done by an outside vendor. Coordination with Headquarters Staff for payment is recommended so that the Production Editor does not have to pay and wait for reimbursement of large amounts.
The Production Editor is a member of the Communications Committee, and thus is expected to be involved in setting publication standards for print materials.
