The Order of the Augustan Eagle (OAE), a dependency of The Augustan Society, Inc., is governed by a Council of the Order, commonly called the Eagle Council.
The members of the Eagle Council are:
- The President of the Society, who serves as Chief of the Order;
- The Eagle Grand Marshal;
- The Eagle Grand Chancellor;
- The Eagle Vice-Chancellor;
- The Eagle Secretary General; and
- The Eagle Receiver General.
Ex officio members of the Eagle Council are:
- The Eagle Assistant Secretary General, normally the Society's Assistant Secretary;
- The Eagle Assistant Receiver General, normally the Society's Assistant Treasurer; and
- Headquarters Staff.
The Eagle Council is charged to meet at least annually at the call of the Chief of the Order. Meetings are chaired by the Chief, and in his absence the gavel falls to other members in the order given above.
A quorum of the Eagle Council is three (not counting ex officio members). Upon the failure of a council meeting to obtain a quorum, items identified as urgent in the agenda will be decided upon by the Directors present at the next regular meeting of the Board.
The duties of the Eagle Council include:
- Making recommendations to the Board on changes to the Society's Mission Statement and Vision Statement;
- Setting Society Membership Privileges;
- Setting Society member discounts;
- Setting the Warrant of Precedence for the Society and the OAE;
- Settling disputes between members in matters of honor, where both parties agree to accept the ruling of the Council (Note: This duty may be delegated to an uninvolved member or members of the Council, or if none are available, to an uninvolved member or members of the OAE.);
- Establishing the specific duties of the component offices; and
- Such other duties as may be delegated to them by the Board.
Primary among such other duties at present is the charge to maintain the Five-Year Plan.
When the Eagle Council cannot meet due to insufficient officers having been named to obtain a quorum, their work may be done by an ad hoc committee of willing members of the OAE under the chairmanship of anyone other than a member of the Eagle Council.
