Awards
Awards for service to the Society are granted to members of The Augustan Society, Inc., annually by the Board of Directors. The web page describing them is at the main web site.
Definition of Awards
A service award is to be granted annually to the member who contributed the most to the Society in the previous year. “Contributed” here is not restricted to financial contributions, nor to just those factors considered for Fellowship, though one would expect both to be considerations.
The award granted will be the Balling award, unless the recipient has received that award five times, in which case they will be granted the Metzler award.
Those holding the Metzler award are no longer eligible for service awards.
Qualification and Selection
Candidates must be a member in Good Standing at the time of their nomination. As the awards are normally voted at the February Board meeting, this requires that they renew their membership before the agenda deadline for same.
Headquarters Staff will nominate a small number of eligible candidates based on the increase in their Fellowship scores over the past year.
Directors may nominate other members in good standing for just cause.
The Board, meeting in closed session, will select the deserving candidate.
While there is no bar to granting an award to the same individual (or members of a couple) in consecutive years, one might wish to refrain so as to prevent other worthy candidates from being "locked out" until such individual (or couple) are promoted to Metzler awards.
While it is expected that an award will be granted each year, the Board is not obliged to do so.
Action
Upon election:
The Secretary will send a Letter of notification, with a copy to the Augustæum Editor and Headquarters Staff.
The Secretary will also create a Certificate, signed by the President and Secretary, affix the Seal of the Corporation, and send to the recipient with the above letter.
If the honoree attends a physical Annual Convention in the year of any of his awards, the insignia will be given to them gratis (but only once). Otherwise, they may purchase the insignia.
The insignia is a lapel pin, oval, Or gutté de sang, an eagle displayed Sable.
It is expected that honorees will be recognized on a permanent plaque to be hung at Headquarters once such a public facility is had.
